Ride information

Mountain biking in Johannesburg starts closer than you think.

Johannesburg has a strong MTB culture, with clubs, weekend group rides and many riders using the trails for fitness, social riding and adventure.

Gauteng offers surprisingly varied riding: city greenbelt trails, bike parks, farm routes, rocky technical sections and longer gravel-style rides. Adventure does not always start far from the city — sometimes it begins on the trail just around the corner.

JMBC rides are designed to be enjoyable, organised and welcoming. Routes vary by venue, group and distance, but every ride follows the same basic principles: arrive prepared, ride safely and respect the group.

JMBC rides cater for a wide range of riders, from beginners discovering the sport to experienced mountain bikers looking for longer and more challenging routes. Most Sunday rides offer multiple groups and distances, allowing everyone to ride at a pace that suits their fitness and experience level.

Better together

Group riding is strongly recommended, especially on quieter or more isolated trail sections. It is safer, more social and a better way to learn.

Ride info

Before you join a ride

A few simple things help every ride run smoothly and keep the group safe.

Ride rules

No helmet, no ride. Please obey all traffic laws and trail rules, keep left and pass on the right. Stay with your allocated group, follow your ride leader’s instructions and never pass the group leader. Children under 14 must ride with a parent or guardian. Please do not stop in the middle of the trail, and always respect other riders, trail users and private property.

What to bring

Bring a mountain bike in good working condition, a helmet, gloves and suitable riding gear. Carry enough water for the distance — at least 1.5L per 20km — plus a spare tube, tyre levers, pump and puncture kit. Please also bring ID or emergency contact details, along with a positive attitude and respect for other trail users.

Ride etiquette

Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the ride starts to allow time for registration and group allocation. Be friendly and courteous to fellow riders, communicate clearly when passing, and let the rider behind you know if you need to stop. Leave no litter behind, respect the trails and surrounding environment, and always ride at a pace that matches your group.

Weekly rides

Different groups for different levels.

Different groups for different levels.

Sunday rides are usually split into pace groups based on skill, fitness and distance. This helps beginners, families and experienced cyclists enjoy the same ride venue without being pushed into the wrong pace.

JMBC generally rides in four groups:

  • Green: 25–30 km, ideal for beginners, families and relaxed social riders.
  • Yellow: 30–35 km, suited to intermediate riders who are comfortable with a bit more distance.
  • Red: 35–45 km, for stronger riders with good fitness and more trail experience.
  • Blue: 40 km+, for experienced riders looking for longer, faster or more challenging routes.

Joburg’s altitude makes riding a good fitness challenge, especially for climbs and longer endurance rides. Winter can be dry and dusty, while summer brings greener trails, mud, storms and erosion — so every season rides a little differently.

Visitors are welcome and can join a club ride for R40 per ride. Please arrive early so you can sign indemnity, meet the group and be placed with riders of a suitable level.
